Summer is a great time for families to create lasting memories together while school is out. Our region has no shortage of fun, educational family activities to explore and stay busy all summer long! Whether you’re looking to explore the great outdoors, dive into local history, or spark your child’s curiosity with hands-on science experiments, there are plenty of options to choose from. Here are eight exciting activities families can enjoy together to make the most of their summer break.

1. Visit Local Museums

2. Explore Nature Trails

Grafton Lakes State Park offers miles of easily walkable trails.

The Capital Region has miles of nature trails to explore! Spend some time outdoors and see how many animals you can find at Grafton, or take in spectacular views at Thacher Park.

4. Visit Historical Sites

Martin Van Buren’s home in Kinderhook is a short drive south of Troy on Route 9.

Our area is full of history! Check out these local historic sites, and you can always visit the National Park Service and the NYS Department of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation to find additional places to visit.

5. Participate in Library Programs

6. Explore Botanical Gardens

The Pine Bush Preserve is a great place to explore the outdoors.

Take in the natural beauty of our region! These parks and trails offer many beautiful plants to learn about. As a bonus activity, take photos of some of your favorite plants, and learn as much as you can about them after your visit!
